Buying a Used Car in Cardiff or Newport? Why the 30-Minute Drive to Blackwood Saves You Money

City forecourts carry city overheads. What a short drive up the valley does to the price, and how to make the trip worth it.

If you're searching for used cars in Cardiff or Newport, you're looking in the two most expensive places in South Wales to run a forecourt. Blackwood is around 30 minutes up the valley from either city, and a car on a Valleys road doesn't carry a city rent. Here's what that does to the price, how to make the trip worth it, and what to do if you'd rather not drive at all.

Why the same car costs more in the city

A used car's price has two parts: what the dealer paid for it, and what it costs the dealer to sell it. The first part is roughly the same everywhere in South Wales, because dealers buy from the same auctions, the same part-exchanges and the same private sellers. The second part isn't. A forecourt beside the M4, on Newport Road in Cardiff or on a Newport retail park costs several times what the same space costs in Pontllanfraith, and that money has to come from somewhere. It comes from the price of each car, or from the admin fee added at the desk, or from the preparation that quietly doesn't get done.

That's not a criticism of city dealers; it's arithmetic. But it does mean the cheapest version of a given car is often ten miles up a valley, not on the ring road.

Make the trip count: do the homework from your sofa

The one real cost of buying out of town is a wasted journey. Avoid it by doing before you leave what most people do when they arrive:

  1. Pick the car online first. Every car on our forecourt is listed with its cash price, mileage, year, fuel, gearbox and a full set of photos, including the marks. If it isn't on the site, it isn't for sale.
  2. Run the registration through GOV.UK. The free MOT history check tells you the mileage at every test and any advisories. How to read it.
  3. Ask us for the history check. Message us the car and we'll send the HPI certificate before you set off.
  4. Book a viewing. Booking online means the car is cleaned, warmed up and parked at the front with its paperwork ready, and the person you spoke to is expecting you.
  5. Plan the test drive. Ask to go up a hill. A car that's fine on the flat can show a tired clutch or a weak diesel the moment it meets a Valleys gradient, and we have plenty of those.

A fair way to compare a city price with ours

Don't compare advert prices; compare out-the-door prices. For any car you're looking at in Cardiff or Newport, ask three questions: is there an admin or preparation fee on top; has it had a service and a fresh MOT before sale; and what warranty is included rather than sold as an extra. Then look at the same model, age and mileage with us. Our answers are no fee, yes to both, and warranty cover included. If the city car is still cheaper after that, buy it, and good luck to you. Most of the time it isn't.

Would rather not drive? We deliver

If you've chosen a car and would rather it came to you, we deliver anywhere in the UK for an extra charge based on distance, quoted before you pay so there are no surprises. For Cardiff, Newport, Cwmbran and the rest of the M4 corridor the cost is modest, and you can still have the usual right to reject if the car isn't as described. Collection from the showroom is always free.

Selling as well as buying? Bring it with you

A lot of buyers from the cities arrive in the car they want rid of. We buy cars outright, and you don't have to buy from us to sell to us. Tell us the registration when you book and we'll have an offer ready; if you take it, we pay the full amount by bank transfer the same day and you drive home in the new one. How selling to us works.

Your questions answered

How far is Blackwood from Cardiff?

Around 17 miles. Off-peak it's about 30 to 40 minutes by car via the A470 and A469 through Caerphilly, or the A48 and A467 through Newport.

How far is Blackwood from Newport?

Around 12 miles. Take the A467 through Risca and Crosskeys, then the A472; it's about 25 to 30 minutes off-peak.

Are used cars cheaper in the Valleys than in Cardiff or Newport?

Often, yes. Dealers buy stock from the same sources, but a Valleys forecourt costs far less to run than a city or motorway site, and that difference feeds into the asking price and the fees. Compare the total out-the-door price of the same model, age and mileage.

Can I see a car's paperwork before I travel?

Yes. Message us the car and we'll send its HPI certificate and MOT history before you set off. Booking a viewing online means the car is prepared and waiting with its paperwork when you arrive.

Do you deliver to Cardiff or Newport?

Yes. We deliver anywhere in the UK for a distance-based charge quoted before you pay. Collection from the showroom in Pontllanfraith is free.

In short

  • Dealers buy cars from the same sources; what differs is the cost of selling them, and city overheads end up in the price or the fees.
  • Blackwood is about 30–40 minutes from Cardiff and 25–30 from Newport, closer than many buyers think.
  • Choose the car online, run the GOV.UK MOT check, ask for the HPI certificate and book a viewing before you set off.
  • Compare out-the-door prices: fees, preparation and included warranty, not the advert number.
  • Prefer not to drive? We deliver UK-wide for a quoted charge, and we'll buy the car you arrive in.
